TWO-DIMENSIONAL NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE PRIMARY CONSOLIDATION OF SATURATED SOFT CLAYS

ANALISIS NUMERICO BIDIMENSIONAL DE LA CONSOLIDACION PRIMARIA DE ARCILLAS BLANDAS SATURADAS

A two-dimensional analysis of the earthfill consolidation problem is carried out in this report. An effective stress model was prepared defining the soil behaviour as that of an elastoplastic material with isotropic properties capable of becoming rigid and of the non-associative type. An analytic method was developed taking into account the variation of the total stresses occurring during the consolidation process using an iterative procedure. The finite element method is then applied to the numerical solution of the problem using rectangular elements to make the space discrete. The model so developed is applied to the study of a typical case of an indefinite strip load acting on the surface of a saturated clay stratum of finite depth. This stratum lies on a rockbed with a smooth and impermeable interface. The loaded surface is assumed to be permeable. An actual problem is studied consisting of the load test of a footing comparing the results of applying the model and the measurements taken. (TRRL)
