The report documents the data preparation phase of ARRB Project 324 (multivariate model of traffic speed on two lane roads). The task of preparing the data base was to transform data that were captured on 16 mm films, video tapes and written onto forms into one integrated record. A combination of seven manual processes and 13 computer processes was planned and implemented to prepare the comprehensive data base required for the project. The computerised processes served mainly for calculations of several variables, for matching and merging records and for detection of errors in the records. Manual processes were used to retrieve data from 16 mm films and video tapes and to match records of the same vehicle in cases where the computer failed to do so. The combinations of computer and manual processes for matching records of the same vehicle proved to be very successful. Based on the experience in data collection and preparation of the data base it is recommended that adequate instrumentation (i.e. Radar cameras) be used in future projects of similar requirements of data. It was estimated that only 20 per cent of the manual work used for preparing the data base for this project would have been required if more advanced instrumentation had been used. (Author/TRRL)
