SPEEDS ON TWO- LANE RURAL ROADS: THE DATA BASE

The report describes the data base of vehicle trips prepared for ARRB project 324 (speeds on two lane rural roads), and is aimed to serve as a manual for the data base users. The report contains a detailed description of the record structure (78 variables) and full coding tables. Data for over 2000 vehicle trips were collected on three sites along the princes and South Gippsland highways in Victoria. Each vehicle trip record contains measurements of the vehicle behaviour (speed, platooning and number of overtakings) along a road section of two to three kilometres. The record contains also measurements concerning the factors affecting vehicle behaviour (human factor, mechanical factor and interaction with other vehicles factor). As the sample of sites is small, the road factor variables were not included in the data base. It is believed that the data base could be of value also to other studies of traffic flow on two lane rural roads. (Author/TRRL)
