The aim of the report is to summarize (1) existing knowledge about the mechanism behind the formation of snow drifts and (2) proposals for measures to reduce traffic disturbances caused by snow drifting. In addition, an investigation of problems in connection with snow drifting in the County of Malmoehus in the winter of 1978/79 is presented. It is apparent that problems mainly arise in cuts within which group 68,4% of all observations fall with a dominance for short and deep cuts. Other factors evaluated include: flat terrain without embankments or cuts, embankments, transition between cuts and embankments, vegetation, buildings, topography and plough-ridges. A number of measures are proposed and the following may be mentioned. There is a need for more rational snow clearing equipment mainly with a view to reducing or eliminating the formation of plough-ridges. Increased use of snow slingers is advocated. Snow screens should be used at particularly exposed points. Development work could improve their efficiency as well as reduce their high costs. Cuts should be shaped so that the laminary flow is disturbed as little as possible. For small and steep cuts a considerable improvement can be achieved by rounding off the top, flattening the sides and by widening and deepening the ditches. (TRRL)
