Re-Visiting Passenger Transport in Mega Cities of India: How Far Do People Commute?

Commute trips could be a cause of at least half of the incidences of urban con-gestion. In this backdrop, the present research attempts to understand commute linked mobility in mega cities of India. This analysis has considered two dimensions namely, commute distance and commute mode preference. The research reveals that each mega city has its own characteristic and devising an envelope transport policy for mega cities as a group is difficult. As commute trips have a known origin and destination, use of non-motorized/ non-personalized modes need to be incentivized. Such a policy has the potential to push mega cities on a sustainable coarse and help them realize their economic potential.
