Contribution to Implementation a Safe Cycling Infrastructure on Santa Catarina Island, Brazil

Brazil currently has problems related to traffic jam due to the increased number of motor vehicles in cities. There is a lack of policies to promote the use of bicycles as an alternative means of transport. The Santa Catarina Island, Florianopolis, is located in southern Brazil and has attractive as its natural beauty, being a tourist region. The city has 675 km² of area and 52 km among bike paths and bike lanes. Besides, there is no connexion between the bike lanes and the cycling infrastructure is insecurely located. This paper deals with the evaluation and diagnosis of bike paths and lanes of the city of Florianopolis, for which solutions are proposed and measures in order to promote this means of transportation. The measures are based on policies that are established in countries as reference for cycling, based on the Brazilian reality. In order to improve cycling infrastructure were evaluated alternatives, such as physical separation of the road, signaling and efficient improvement of the pavement. It is expected that the proposed solutions can contribute to the improvement of cycling infrastructure in the city and making cycling as more attractive practice, contributing to the social question, economic and social.
