ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT RECORDS SYSTEM OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA

This paper was presented at the Local Government Engineers Association of WA development course. It describes a road traffic accident records system (rotars) currently in operation in western Australia (WA). Accident data is stored on a computerised data base held and maintained by the Main Roads Department. Rotars is an integrated system in that it can be linked with other related data base systems making it possible for accidents to be studied in relation to road, vehicle, and driver factors. The data source is the traffic accident report form used by the Road Traffic Authority to record details of all reported accidents occurring in WA. Output is via standard reports and an on-line enquiry system. Procedures are also available for creating special research files for processing by SPSS program package. Future development includes a system for automatically identifying hazardous locations and use of flat bed plotter for preparing collision diagrams (A). (TRRL)
