RELEVANT FINDINGS FROM THE BRAZILIAN ROAD RESEARCH PROJECT
This discussion note provides an outline of the experimental and survey designs of a 12 million dollar Brazilian Ministry of Transport and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) supported research study aimed at determining relationships between vehicle user costs, roadway design standards and maintenance policies. The empirical relationships between road user costs, roadway design and maintenance policies that will emerge from the analysis of data collected in the experiments and surveys outlined will add considerably to the scant knowledge existing in the available literature. Road roughness is seen to have a marked influence on road user costs and yet research in Australia into its effect on these costs has been minimal. (TRRL)
