Feasibility Study of PV-Powered, Fiber-Optic Traffic Light Technology for Sustainable and Safe Transportation

This article describes a preliminary technical feasibility study for developing a next generation traffic light technology employing photovoltaic (PV)-powered, remote-source fiber-optic lighting has been established. Based on a simplistic analysis, and a pre-prototype building and testing, it has been demonstrated that there is an opportunity for this technology, which can eliminate or minimize the energy use by traffic signals, simplify maintenance, and reduce liability. The preliminary analysis showed that a 1.5-kW PV system is suitable for a 4-lane, 4-way signal intersection. The estimated cost of a PV-powered, fiber-optic light system is about $14,000 and $9,000 for a system with battery back-up and without battery back-up, respectively
