COMPARATIVE CALCULATIONS ON THE DYNAMIC LOADING OF CONTAINER SHIPS IN REGULAR WAVES

This work forms part of a research project "Influence of the Depth of Container Ships on Longitudinal and Torsional Strength, Steel Weight, Building Costs, Stability, Total Load Capacity and Deck Stowing Techniques", commissioned by the German Research Association. The subject of the present Report is the calculation of the dynamic loading of container ships in regular waves. Dynamic sea loads--vertical and horizontal shear forces, bending moments and the torsional moment--for a homogeneously loaded containership advancing at constant mean speed at arbitrary heading in regular sinusoidal waves, are calculated by the computer program SCORES. Comparisons are made between the above calculations and the results of the program F 115 (FQGR) of Germanischer Lloyd for the axisymmetric load components based on the same input data. The SCORES results, including those for the vertical bending moments, are then referred to the classification rules of Germanischer Lloyd. The agreement found is considered sufficiently satisfactory to recommend SCORES as a useful tool for predicting ship structural loads in a seaway. Order from BSRA as No. 54, 713.
