THE USEFULNESS OF THE LUF-SYSTEM FOR TRANSPORT OF FOREST PRODUCTS

LUF-SYSTEMETS ANVAENDBARHET FOER TRANSPORT AV SKOGSPRODUKTER

The luf-system is a method of handling large unit-loads (60-180 tons) for roll on/roll off transportation by sea. In the case of forest products, unit loads of 80 and 60 tons (maximum) are used, which requires head room in the hold of 6.3 and 5.9 metres. Luf-unit loads with forest products give an individual wheel loading of 4.8 tons per wheel of A 16-wheels truck. The loading of luf-pallets is carried out in the warehouse before the ship arrives at the loading terminal. Tests and measures that have been carried out show that the cross-ship forces determine the necessary safety. Lashing in combination with air cushions establishes necessary security. The luf-system is well suited for paper rolls and can give considerable cuts in the transport costs. Reductions in the region of 4-20 sek per ton have been estimated. Through the small requirement of manpower when loading the ship and the short loading time, good possibilities are created for a continuous loading and more ports of call. The system provides good working conditions and working environment for the loading staff.
