Going digital in an operating railway

Underestimating going digital in an operating railway can lead to implementation and operating difficulties, particularly in Australia. Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink, together with TfNSW who are delivering the new Digital Systems Program, are in the initial stages of the journey in moving from a traditional lineside analogue signalling control system to a cab signalled traffic management system Network. This brings with it significant benefits and opportunities for the businesses but it requires a transformational change. The approach to this transformational change must be comprehensive and requires collaboration with others who have been down this road before as an imperative to maximise outcomes. This paper show’s how the Digital Systems Program will enable Sydney Trains to truly transform into the digital age. This paper also provides a perspective on the approach Australian railway operators should take to ensure a safe and smooth implementation of a digital railway, as it transitions from traditional to new technology.
