Update on harmonisation of rolling stock standards and what’s next
The paper discusses the benefits of establishing harmonised standards for rolling stock manufacture and maintenance in Australia, and the consequent joint development by Victoria and other States of the first guidelines for national application. The chosen pilot guidelines cover train bogies and glazing systems. Harmonised standards for critical rail components will reduce manufacturing costs, support local content and improve the capability of the rolling stock supply chain to compete domestically and globally. A proposed future focus for standards harmonisation will be outlined to help move Australia further down the road of nationally consistent rail standards providing practical synergy in rolling stock procurement specification.
