Quality assurance at work: a story of depot weld compliance

The ARTC owned flashbutt welding depot located in Port Augusta, South Australia has been able to produce over 30,000 welds to date with 100% compliance upon departure from the depot. A pulse flashbutt welding machine is used to weld together rail lengths up to 165m within the quality-controlled depot. Internal NDT inspections comprising of electronic geometrical recordings, ultrasonic testing (UT), visual inspection and continuous process monitoring are used to deliver every weld direct to site ready for installation. Current target production rates are 98 welds per day resulting in over 3.2km of rail (1.6km of track) available for site delivery every day.
