A Look at Superpave5
This article familiarizes readers with Superpave5, reviewing first the Superpave method of pavement mix design, then considering the possibility of re-engineering pavement mixes to a new standard of 5% air voids for both design and construction. Topics include the types of pavement wear issues that are common today, the differences between using Superpave4 and Superpave5, asphalt binder content, and field performance (including permeability). The author also briefly describes a 2018 demonstration project in Indiana that featured 12 projects that used Superpave5 mixtures; the results were so positive that Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has implemented Superpave5 specifications for all INDOT projects after September 2019.
