DETERMINATION OF THE ROLLING RESISTANCE OF VARIOUS TYRES ON DIFFERENT ROAD SURFACES
DETERMINATION DE LA RESISTANCE AU ROULEMENT DE DIVERS PNEUMATIQUES SUR DIFFERENTS REVETMENTS ROUTIERS
The report gives details of wind tunnel methods used to test vehicle drag and lift coefficients as well as lateral forces. To overcome disagreement between the resistance determined in track tests and chassis dynamometer tests, a further test has been introduced. This consists of accelerating a vehicle at low speed on a track of known gradient so that the basic resistance of the tyres can be determined and also the rolling resistance found by the difference between total resistance (deceleration on the track) and aerodynamic drag (wind tunnel). With the combination of these test methods, the influence of such parameters as inflation pressure, adjustment angle, and type of road surface can be studied and comparisons made between different types of tyre.
