Thermodynamic and Dynamic Assessment of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Hybrid Systems for Use in Locomotives

The purpose of this investigation was to validate the feasible use of one of the currently available industrial gas turbine engines (i.e., the 200 kW C-200 engine of Capstone Turbines) in the hybrid fuel cell gas turbine test system for locomotive application. The National Fuel Cell Research Center (NFCRC) developed a full 500 kW dynamic computer model of hybrid fuel cell gas turbine system components for a test locomotive engine and demonstrated that the Capstone C-200 micro gas turbine integrated into a 500 kW hybrid solid oxide fuel cell-gas turbine (SOFC-GT) system is a viable possible option for locomotive applications. In addition, a new MATLAB code was developed and applied to integrating the gas turbine with both a Bloom Energy 200 kW SOFC system and a Versa Power 400 kW SOFC system.
