Avoiding blame when violating traffic rules: the development and validation of the justifications of traffic violations scale

This study examines how drivers self-exonerate themselves when violating traffic laws. The authors interviewed 382 Romanian drivers and using a social cognitive theory framework developed a Justifications of Traffic Violations (JTVs) scale to measure and assess drivers justification strategies. The validity of the JTVs were examined though association with traffic offenses, accidents caused, and driving style. Four strategies were identified that allow drivers to break traffic laws without psychological costs including: personal needs-based justification; minimizing risks; displacement of responsibility; and outcome-based justification.
