This report describes SCORE, equipment which monitors traffic signal controllers in the field. It was developed by the author for research investigation but it could also be used in controller maintenance and acceptance testing. SCORE produces a time-related paper record of activity on as many as twenty controller circuits. The paper record allows controller behavior to be analyzed at leisure. Optical coupling is the method of connection. This enables SCORE to be used on controller makes and models which have circuit monitor lamps or to which monitor lamps can be fitted. This eliminates interference with controller circuits and proves to be a versatile and quick method of connection. The need for improved maintenance of traffic signal controllers is indicated in the report. Provision of a testing service to help small local authorities achieve better maintenance is suggested, and the usefulness of SCORE in this context is discussed. Seven demonstration examples are provided for the dual purpose of illustrating SCORE and informing users of the workings of various controller models.
