Evaluation of Influence of Delay of Image Information on Steering Maneuver in Remotely Controllable Automated Driving System

In the remotely controllable automated driving system, an operator at the remote station has to supervise the remote vehicle and control its steering and brake as occasion arises by using camera images sent from it via wireless communication. This study evaluates the influence of communication delay of camera images on operability of a remote vehicle. To make conditions of variety of delay of camera images, a remote control simulator is developed. By evaluating the lane tracking performance while delay is present, the amount of allowance of delay under low speed driving is revealed.
