DESIGN OF A SHIP RESPONSE MONITORING AND GUIDANCE SYSTEM FOR U.S.N.S. FURMAN

The development of a ship response monitoring and guidance system (SMGS) for the USNS FURMAN, a Victory (VC2-5-AP3) cargo ship operating in the North Pacific, is described. This involved four stages: (1) Theoretical calculations of ship response amplitude operators for motions, accelerations and stresses; (2) Assessment of relative importance of various responses in determining tentative operational limitations; (3) Specification of the sensors, instrumentation and software to be placed aboard ship, and (4) Relating the findings to the needs of the project participants.
