Some thoughts are presented on the optimum movement of vehicles on highways. Incorporated within the scenario are concepts for vehicle operations and traffic control that have been developed. The intent of this study is to interject some advanced control techniques into a system where communication is identified as a critical element for traffic flow operations. It is concluded that the problem is principally one of obtaining information to perform necessary action. The payoff, should the objective be realized, could be most significant. Optimization of trip length, travel time, highway system utilization, and energy are the direct and equal beneficiaries of successful achievement of the objectives.
