The results of a major port development and planning study for Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, are used to illustrate an approach to port planning which can provide important information for regional economic development. Brief data are given on past and future traffic volumes, manpower and dollars activity levels of port services. Direct and indirect economic impact data are provided, and this is translated into impact per ton for various categories of cargo and commodities. The results of overall economic analyses provide very useful material for future decision making relating to implementation of projects and economic development.
