PRIORITIES FOR EXTERNAL SAFETY MEASURES ON LORRIES

PRIORITAETEN FUER MASSNAHMEN ZUR AEUSSEREN SICHERHEIT VON LASTKRAFTWAGEN

Principles differences are established with respect to a comparison of the passive safety of cars and lorries. For example the commercial operation of the lorry, the completely different accident situation, the fewer protective measures and the more aggressive behaviour of the lorry. Some of the legal requirements in the field of active safety are given: speed limits, special training, construction of the brakes; and in the field of passive safety - the requirement for safety belt installation and use, the provision of an underride protector, and the static and dynamic strengthening of the lorry cab. Making the front of the lorry less angular would be a great step forward in safety, as it is a particular cause of injury in accidents. It is established that the focus of future safety measures for lorries will be on "seeing and being seen", and on improvements to the front, rear, and sides of vehicles. (TRRL)
