ROADSIDE GRADIENTS OF LEAD AND ZINC CONCENTRATIONS IN SURFACE-DWELLING INVERTEBRATES

Samples of soil, vegetation and invertebrates were taken along six transects perpendicular to major roads. The levels of lead and zinc found decreased with distance from the road in all samples except for the invertebrate Zn results which were uninfluenced by proximity to the road. The invertebrates showed a 64% decrease in Pb body burden between roadside values and levels 150m from the road.
