APPLICATION OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS IN ENGINEERING GEOMORPHOLOGICAL MAPPING FOR HIGHWAY ENGINEERING DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE

Engineering geomorphological mapping has been employed to investigate slope stability on the main highway between Amman and Jerusalem (between the Kms. 20 and 25 to the southwest of Amman) in an area of extreme relief differences. Photo-interpretation and ground geomorphological survey were used to identify slope process features, morphology of landslides, materials type, engineering geomorphological units and slope stability zones of significant relevance to highway engineering. The results were presented in a form of geomorphological stability map of 1:10,000. The produced map provides useful data which enable the highway engineer to evaluate the terrain rapidly, and to select an alternative alignment of the highway on a ground of more suitable slope stability conditions.
