FOR INTRODUCES INDEPENDENT FRONT SUSPENSION ON 4 X 4S

Ford Motor Co. has developed a new independent front suspension for its four-wheel-drive light trucks. The twin traction beam suspension uses stamped support arms and a third U-joint in the front axle to achieve independent front suspension. The new independent front suspension (IFS) was developed strictly for the front drive axle; it was not merely an adaptation of an existing rear axle design. The IFS uses an integrated systems approach which incorporates suspension functions into the basic axle design (axle support arms are also suspension arms).
