DRIVESHAFTS: THE NEXT STEP FOR COMPOSITES

Composite driveshafts can offer a 7-kg savings when used for light truck applications in which a one-piece composite design (yoke-tube-spline) can replace a two-piece (yoke-tube-center bearing-tube-spline) steel assembly. Investigators have determined that a hybrid glass/carbon shaft manufactured by the wet filament winding process offers the best combination of cost effectiveness, high-rate production, structural performance, and reliability.
