TRANSPORT AND ENERGY: PROBLEMS AND POSSIBILITIES

Based on estimates that 15-33% of energy consumed in developed countries is used for transport purposes, the paper reviews ways in which road transport energy, which accounts for 80% of total transport consumption, can continue to be reduced. Changes in the use and design of vehicles are considered. Energy reducing measures considered include: fuel pricing; physical restraints; traffic management; speed limits; the use of high-occupancy vehicles; and, energy saving education. (TRRL) (TRRL)
