SMALL-CAR AIRBAG RESTRAINTS DEVELOPED
Researchers at Minicars, Inc. have developed and verified airbag restraint systems for the Chevrolet Chevette and Dodge Omni which meet requirements of FMVSS 208. It is a torso/kneebag combination mounted high on the vehicle dashboard. It incorporates a thin gage steel module pan to provide a reaction surface for the kneebag. The 35-L kneebag is mated to the 113-L torso bag exterior and the gas is vented from the kneebag to the torso bag via a 57 mm diameter orifice during the crash event. In this way the kneebag gas is used twice, first in the knee restraint and later in the torso bag. The torso bag vents to the vehicle compartment as the occupant penetrates the bag, thus providing a method of force limitation and rebound control.
