Japanese researchers have developed a new radiator cooling fan which has increased airflow past the radiator by 35% and lowered engine coolant temperatures by as much as 10 degree C in testing. This new fan has reduced the noise level by 6 dB(A) and the required power by 34% while maintaining the same cooling performance. The basic difference in this "guide fan" is the addition of guide vanes on the surface of the fan blades. These vanes produce a "mixed" airflow having radial and axial flows which improve ventilation at the discharge side of the fan.
