In May 1966, a contract was placed for the construction of four 200,000 barrels (21,000 long tons) frozen inground storage units at the Canvey Island L.N.G. Terminal. This will increase total storage from 26,000 long tons to 110,000 long tons. This paper reviews the need for increased storage and greater flexibility of operation, and the reasons for selecting inground units. Proposed operational use of this storage for peak load purposes is mentioned. the design of the units and the method of freezing are dealt with in some detail. The soil strata and its suitability for inground storage is discussed. The freeze tube arrangement is described with the methods used for determining the extent of the ice wall. Design features include the spherical aluminum roof, concrete ring beam, gas sealing arrangement and insulation for roof and surrounding ground. Liquid fill, discharge and boil-off gas arrangements are described. An account is given of the construction of the first unit and the difficulties encountered during the construction period. Problems discussed include the factors to be taken into account before the decision for excavation to start can be given, the effect of settlement and ground heave on the concrete ring beam renewal of base plug freezing due to uncertainty of Algerian L.N.G. supplies and difficulties associated with the welding of 3/16" thick aluminum plate. A brief description is given of a plant for transferring cold energy from outgoing base load L.N.G. to the calcium chloride brine being circulated through the freeze tubes for ground freezing. Finally, mention is made of the peak load freezing and evaporation facilities associated with those inground units. (Author)
