ENGINEERING HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 1980 AUTOMOBILES
Various techniques for meeting the increasingly stringent regulations for exhaust emissions and fuel economy are found on the 1980 model cars. Some have been made smaller, others lighter via lightweight materials and finely tuned design. More diesel engines are appearing and the first 4-wheel-drive automobile is being offered. More electronics technology has been used to control air-fuel ratio, spark timing, and other operating variables. Multiple catalysts and electronic controls have been added to vertically all new vehicles to meet the 1980 emission standards.
