A method known as the Spi-Wear method has been developed by the Spire Corp. for measurement of surface wear in inaccessible regions or harsh environments. This technique has proved effective for monitoring internal engine wear and may be extended to hydraulic components. The Spi-Wear method measures the decrease in radiation that occurs with the wearing of an irradiated part. Future applications may enable continuous monitoring of parts with computer systems deciding when a part should be replaced.
