HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION ZONE SAFETY-PROGRESS IS MADE

During recent years there has been greatly increased concern for traffic safety in construction areas. The effort to improve detour design through better routing and improved traffic control has been a national concern. As a result, many states and some smaller jurisdictions have taken constructive steps to develop new and better procedures. Procedures have been developed in New Mexico to improve safety in construction areas, which are reviewed in the paper.
