Computer programs have been developed at Ford to permit evaluation of permanent deflection and denting of automobile bumpers. Using simplified, idealized bumper sections, informed selection from groups of proposed designs is possible at low cost. Test results show good agreement with analytical predictions. Predicting damageability of proposed bumper designs can save both tooling and fabrication costs for prototype bumpers and shorten lead times between design and production.
