A volumeter suitable for the bulk volume measurement of solid, regular or irregular specimens of natural or man made materials is described. It resembles a well-type manometer. By means of a piston-cylinder system a volume of mercury equal to that of the test specimen is displaced. A direct reading of the solid specimen volume can be made. Results of swelling tests on wood, sandstone and shale are given. The construction, operation, standardization and precautions to be taken are described. The results are accurate to plus or minus one tenth millilitre. (TRRL)
