RESEARCH INTO THE ELIMINATION OF ACCIDENT BLACK SPOTS

FORSCHUNG ZUR BESEITIGUNG VON UNFALLSTELLEN

Reduction of accident black spots leads to a significant decrease in road accidents. The usual methods of eliminating black spots are critically considered. A prerequisite is the systematic recording of accidents, correct evaluation of accidents of which accurate details are not known, and correct assessment of the probability of more accidents occurring. The elimination of local accident causes is made more difficult if there are several causes. There is a ack of criteria on which to base the choice of the most effective measure in each case. With limited finance, priority is given to the elimination of those black spots which results in the greatest gain in safety. This shows the need for a definition of "gain in safety". The lack of knowledge on these points is illustrated and proposals made for improvement. Details are given of the BAST program for the elimination of accident black spots. (TRRL)
