"OVALIZATION": A NEW METHOD OF MEASURING ELASTIC DEFORMATIONS IN PAVEMENTS
L'OVALISATION : UNE NOUVELLE METHODE DE MESURE DES DEFORMATIONS ELASTIQUES DES CHAUSSEES
Stresses or deformations at the base of stabilized layers constitute a good criterion for characterizing the behavior of pavement layers in bending. For a long time strain gauges were the only method of determining the value of this parameter. The process described in this article consists in measuring the variations in the diameter of a cylindrical cavity (ovalization of a bore hole) under a heavy moving load. Indications are given on how to carry out measurements in a cavity and how the results obtained can be translated in terms of deformations (or stresses) in stabilized layers. An example is given, in which ovalization measurements are compared to results obtained with strain gauges. (TRRL)
