THE MOST ABUNDANT PROSPECTIVE ALTERNATIVE FUELS: SHORT-TERM METHANOL, LONG-TERM HYDROGEN

Both the alternative fuels methanol and hydrogen can be used in existing combustion engines without major conversions. Furthermore they offer the possibility of mixed-operation with conventional fuels and their use leads simultaneously to less effect upon the environment. In Europe methanol represents the preferred solution. The operation of A mixture of 85% petrol and 15% methanol is seen as the most economic way of introducing this alternative fuel. In the long term hydrogen is considered to be the most abundant and environmentally helpful alternative fuel. It is available in the world in virtually inexhaustible quantities and completely reduces to steam within an engine almost free of pollutants. On a large scale hydrogen propulsion will only be possible when a suitable supply system has been built up and the manufacture follows according to economic technology. Because of the development problems still to be solved hydrogen propulsion can therefore only achieve decisive significance after the year 2000. (TRRL)
