MEASUREMENT OF DRIVING BEHAVIOUR OF A TRAFFIC COLLECTIVE IN A ROAD TUNNEL FOR THE PURPOSE OF DETERMINING CO EMISSION

Report on research project no 183 (ids 701161). The speeds of a total of 5742 vehicles passing through the Katschberg tunnel were measured with the aid of induction loops spaced 212 M apart. On the basis of the average speed, the frequency distribution of increases or decreases in speed of the individual vehicles between loops, the reference interval, the reference time and the mean maximum speed variation in the tunnel, a tunnel cycle was formulated to represent the typical driving behaviour of the individual vehicle. The tunnel cycle corresponds to freely flowing traffic and is characterised by speeds fluctuating about A mean value of 74 km/h. The CO emissions of eight test vehicles were measured in a roller test stand when running at a constant 74 km/h and also when reproducing the tunnel speed cycle. The influence of driving behaviour can be calculated from the quotient of the CO emission of the individual vehicle when following the tunnel cycle to the average CO emission when travelling at constant speed. This driving variation factor was found to be F equals 1.1 at a speed V equals 74 km/h and represents a target which in future tunnels must be achieved with the aid of a suitable traffic control system.
