CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES--BALANCING CO-OPERATION WITH COMPETITION

Although classification societies have been actively involved in the introduction and maintenance of standards for container manufacture and repair since the industry's early days, for many people their position has often remained somewhat nebulous. Certainly, this changed greatly with the ratification of CSC, when a number of societies were delegated the task of testing containers to CSC specificaitons, and some were authorised with the issuing of CSC certificates. With CSC too, came a greater degree of co-operation between the international classification societies with respect to containers, as is evident now from the way that more unified methods of testing procedures are being introduced. This article discusses the classification societies' role in the container industry.
