FELIXSTOWE DEVELOPING TO BE THE NUMBER 1 UK CONTAINER PORT

Following successive expansion projects over the past 14 years to cater to increasing container throughputs, the Port of Felixstowe recently announced a major 27-million pound-sterling project aimed at more than doubling the port's container handling capacity within the next 18 months. It is anticipated last year's throughput level of 350,000 TEU will increase dramatically when this two-phase development, bringing the port's total throughput capacity up to 750,000 TEU, is in full operation. Four gantry cranes plus a further nine Transtainers will be employed on the new facility, located upriver to the existing container berths, which will require the reclamation of approximately 60 acres of land. The construction work is now in hand, with the first 300m berth due for operation by November 1980 and completion of the whole project by spring 1981.
