GRAIN DISPLACEMENTS IN THE SHEARING DEFORMATION OF SOILS

Report on Research Project No. 065 (IDS 700636). During the deformation of granular soils the relative position of the individual grains is altered. Up to now one could only speculate concerning the actualities of such grain displacements. A coarse sand consisting of grains 1-2 mm diameter was saturated with a polyester resin, both before and after undergoing shear deformation. After the resin had set, the samples were sectioned and polished and each section photographed. In these sections it was possible to locate the points of contact of the grains and to determine the inclination of the tangents and the normals respectively at the contact points. The results were tabulated in a distribution diagram, which is characteristic for the condition of the sample at the time of saturation with resin. Comparison of the distribution diagrams before and after shear deformation indicates that there is a trend for the normals to point predominantly in the direction of high shear stresses. Further shear tests with this coarse sand are intended to clarify its stress-strain behaviour. (TRRL)
