GEOLOGIC PROCESSES AFFECTING THE STABILITY OF ROCK SLOPES ALONG MASSACHUSETTS HIGHWAYS

This paper concerns a program to describe and analyze rock materials along Massachusetts highways. The strength of these materials and any susceptibility to failure depend on their composition and structure, as well as on hydrologic conditions and steepness of the slopes. The program will involve the details of geologic processes affecting the stability of some natural slopes in addition to selected excavations. Activities described involve field observations, materials testing and interpretation of results. Other functions include site assessment and selection, development of survey methods, evaluation of environmental factors and analysis of geologic data. (TRRL)
