The construction of a footing on top of one or several piles is an additional safety factor as regards the vertical bearing capacity of piles. This increase in safety varies greatly according to the geometry of the different elements of the foundation and to the characteristics of the soil. A foundation system - so-called mixed foundation - is proposed where footing and piles support the loads. The design of such a system is based on pressiometer techniques commonly used for the design of footings or piles. It is shown that there is a possibility of taking the presence of the footing into account and of designing such mixed foundations judiciously by making provision, for example, for improvements in the quality of the soil immediately under the footing. This method which has been deliberately kept simple, comes up against difficulties when applied to groups of piles which is the most common case encountered. (TRRL)
