FLEXIBLE SAFETY-FENCE CONSTRUCTION REDUCES THE DANGER FROM COLLISION

FLEXIBLE LEITPLANKEN-KONSTRUKTION MINDERT AUFPRALLGEFAHREN

The effectiveness of a flexible safety fence constructed in Sweden which is designed to guide a car on impact back to the original direction of travel was subjected to a series of tests. The collisions, in which the vehicles were driven at a speed of 70-75 km per hour at angles of 15 degrees and 25 degrees against a safety fence consisting of unreinforced concrete blocks, resulted in little major damage and the vehicles were diverted effectively back onto the carriageway. The test results lead to the conclusion that for 95 to 97% of all collisions this type of construction would give similarly favourable results. (TRRL)
