THE FIAT "HYDROTRANS". THE FUTURE HAS ALREADY BEGUN - THE "FOOL-PROOF" GEAR BOX HAS ARRIVED

FIAT "HYDROTRANS". DIE ZUKUNFT HAT SCHON BEGONNEN: DAS "IDIOTENSICHERE" GETRIEBE IST DA

This report describes the Fiat articulated vehicle "190.35 Hydrotrans" with the WSK-gear box "Idromeccanica". The main functions of the idromeccanica are that with converter the required starting off gearing is produced automatically by the tongue transformer. After the starting-up process the turbine axle on the transformer is connected directly with the flywheel of the engine by means of the pressure clutch. The hydraulic retarder is pre-switched by engine brake. On the hydrotrans a wear-free braking can be maintained at 119 km/h nominal speed on a 44 ton vehicle train - even at 70 km/h on a 5 percent gradient. The fuel consumption is very small compared with a mechanical gear box, since with the "kick-down" gear change conditions which cause higher fuel consumption can be avoided. Finally it is recommended that Magirus long-distance lorries should be fitted with a WSK gear box and that the technical difference will be that the cooling of the converter oil will be carried out by an air-oil cooler.
