THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS MEASURES TO PROTECT AGAINST TRAFFIC NOISE ON HIGHWAYS LINED WITH BUILDINGS

ZUR WIRKSAMKEIT VERSCHIEDENER SCHUTZMASSNAHMEN GEGEN VERKEHRSLAERM AN STRASSEN MIT RANDBEBAUUNG

Acoustic screens and earth embankments are not generally suitable or are insufficient in densely built up areas as protective measures against traffic noise. The effect of some alternative protective measures are described by means of calculations or examples. This demonstrates that the most noticeable decrease in the mean noise level is achieved by banning lorries. The effect of speed restrictions and sunken or enclosed stretches of highway is less than is generally assumed. Important reductions in noise level emission from motor vehicles can only be expected in the medium term at the earliest. (TRRL)
