Experimental data on the behaviour of stiffened plate panels and box girders is reviewed. Laboratory tests were conducted on small scale panels of stiffened plate construction and the results compared with published data. Failure by instability of stiffened panels having various edge conditions and loaded in compression is considered. Failure loads calculated by various methods are compared with published experimental data. Laboratory investigations on small box girders tested as propped cantilevers, and on a column member, demonstrate the influence of the diaphragm on buckling behaviour (a).
